Sapphire Windows

Sapphire Windows

Sapphire is a material with extremely high thermal conductivity, high hardness, scratch resistance, high-temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance. Since sapphire is one of the hardest materials used in optical components, it is commonly used to replace other optical materials to make optical lenses, optical window, UV and IR optical window, as well as to improve optical transmission properties.

Sapphire windows are used in a wide range of UV, visible, and NIR bandwidths, e.g. in instruments such as night vision infrared and far infrared scopes, night vision cameras, and instrumentation for satellites and space technology, as well as windows for high power lasers.

Sapphire is a glass crystal with extremely high hardness. It is scratch-resistant, high-temperature-resistant, chemical-resistant, and has high mechanical strength, making it very suitable for use in harsh conditions.

Sapphire is transparent to translucent. It has a glassy luster, a refractive index of 1.76-1.77, a birefringence of up to 0.008, and a hardness of 9. It is a natural material with a hardness second only to diamond.

Sapphire Al2O3 is one of the hardest minerals and optical materials on earth. It is a material with a special crystal structure and its crystal constants are very close to those of diamond, which makes it extremely hard temperature resistant, and stable at high temperatures or in environments with strong acids and bases.

Due to its high optical transparency and excellent physicochemical properties, sapphire has been widely researched and applied in the fields of optical devices, laser technology, microelectronics, etc. in recent years. It has a Mohs hardness of 9. Lenses made from synthetic sapphire are usually very difficult to scratch, so they are extremely scratch-resistant. Although sapphire is blue, sapphire glass is highly transparent to light wavelengths between 150nm and 5500nm.

This range provides the material with a broad optical transmission band from ultraviolet to near-infrared. Sapphire can also be used in the wavelength range from UV to 5μm. It is also worth noting that the human eye can only distinguish between wavelengths between 380nm and 750nm.
